The purpose of this design guide is to give the participants guidance on how to design their Deck type & Through type Truss Bridge, and insight into the philosophy of both the challenge and the rules. This design guide is also used to clarify the rules.

Materials
The straws are to be the primary structural component. They should be used to build the structures for Truss Bridge. Pins are the only material to help the straws do their job.
The straws used here have 0.5cm diameter and approx.18cm long. These would commonly be described as a regular drinking straw. Each group would have to complete their structure with the help of maximum 200 straws only. Tools required for cutting should be brought by participants.

SPECIFICATIONS for Truss Bridge
To prepare a simple bridge having a span exactly of 1 metre, resting on piers/columns(having hollow cross-section), using given straws & pins in 3 hours such that it can support maximum load and minimum deflection without collapse.
Span (exact length) of bridge: 100 cm
Minimum clear span: 80 cm
Minimum clear height of bridge: 15cm
Minimum width of bridge: 12cm
Maximum time: 3 hours

Rules and Regulations:-

  1. Each team would consist of maximum 3 participants and the time provided to complete the task is 3 hours.
  2. The Bridge would have to be kept directly on the working table, without any kind of support or fixture in between the end columns and the surface where it is to be kept. No intermediate columns can be constructed.
  3. The column/pier should have a hollow cross-section.
  4. Only maximum 200 straws and pins will be allowed during entire construction, no string or any other materials would be allowed even for suspension or as cables.
  5. Tools required for cutting are to be brought by participants.
  6. The bridge can be of any shape, but should be satisfying the specification criteria.
  7. For each team load will be applied on central portion of the Bridge with predetermined method.
  8. Structure would be considered to be failed if any part of it other than column touches the base.
  9. Each team will have to satisfy the dimensions provided in specification chart, violation of any kind would lead to disqualification of the team.
  10. Final decision will be authorized by event judges and shall be binding to all.
  11. At any time the rules can be updated, without any prior notice.

Judging Criteria
Team possessing highest Test for Efficiency Ratio would be declared as winner, according to following equation:
T.E.R= P*(Total Straws/Used Straws)
Where,
T.E.R=Test for Efficiency Ratio
P=Load carried by the bridge prior to predetermined deflection
Load would be applied on the central portion of bridge and the structure will be considered failed as the bridge crosses over the predetermined limit of deflection.
